Scharner set to continue with attacking role

Scharner was given his chance in the 3-1 home victory over Chelsea a little over two weeks ago and impressed in the position. In particular, the Austrian's aerial presence caused Chelsea a great deal pf problems.

Now, manager Martinez is hoping Scharner can continue with his good form against Manchester City a week on Sunday.

Rumours of a fall out between the two are said to be far from the truth with Scharner merely disappointed that it was his man who opened the scoring for Hull at the weekend.

"Paul is a winner and a great professional, and I have no problems with what happened," Martinez told the Evening Post.

"He was obviously very disappointed because it was his man who scored from the corner. He wanted to put it right, and that is a natural reaction. But it was nothing out of the norm for me. There is nothing to forget because it was never an issue."

Speaking about where best to deploy Scharner, Martinez revealed that he believes the Austrian international is able to play pretty much anywhere on the field.

He added: "Paul enjoys his football, he is full of energy that he needs to waste when he is out there on the pitch, and probably at the back he feels that he doesn't use all the energy he has got.

"But he is responsible enough to play in any position that the team needs him to play in, and that is the most important thing.

"Paul Scharner has got everything in that respect. He is someone who can play in defence and in midfield, either in front of the back four or just behind the striker - depending on the problems that the opposition brings.

"I think Paul is at that stage of his career that he understands the different positions really well and it's not a big problem for him at all. Obviously he also has the arrogance of an international player, he is never fazed by the occasion.

"He gives us a goal threat, and he shows great timing when he arrives into the box. He has got that late run that is very difficult to defend against.

"He is also a good aerial threat, especially at set-pieces, which is useful, and he gives us many options in front of goal."
