It appears that Jewell would like Scharner to fill the void left by Jimmy Bullard who has left for Craven Cottage.

Scharner told the Wigan Evening Post: "I spoke with Paul Jewell at the end of last season and I think we are concentrating now on the midfield position.

"I'm happy with that, I think I'm stronger in midfield and like to score goals which is easier from the midfield. If the gaffer decides he needs me at the back it is no problem, but for the future I think it is the midfield for me.

"I've spoken to the Austrian manager too, and he also sees me in the midfield position for international games. I want to do something with Wigan this season, although it is said the second season is a difficult one so we really have to concentrate.

"It will help me that I'm starting the season here, I'll do my first pre-season with the club and I'm looking forward to seeing what that is like. When you come in part way through the season it can be difficult to settle quickly, but now I'm here from the off.

"I enjoyed last season, it was a good start for me, and the Premiership is the best league in Europe – it's played at a really high tempo."

Scharner also revealed why he threw his Carling Cup Final medal into the crowd, he added: "It was meant to be a present for my father but ended up as a present for a supporter sat near him. I got a nice reaction from the supporter, though, he sent me a nice 'thank you' card."
