Scharner looking for swift exit

Scharner's popularity amongst the Wigan support has dropped a great deal over the summer as he has persistenty spoke ill of Wigan Athletic and has done all he can to leave the club.

However nobody seems to want the cocky Austrian defender. Fulham pulled out of a deal last summer and no firm bids were made for the defender this summer.

Scharner is said to be unhappy about being assigned a defensive role within the squad as he wants to play in midfield.

He said: "The manager told me he needs me to play at the back, to bring the bal out and to interpret his tactical concept.

"But I have decided to play in midfield, because that's were I play for Austria, and I told him as much.

"Wigan's clear aim for the season is survival. It looks like being a hard battle. The transfer window is still open until the end of August, so let's just see what happens. If there's nothing, I will be at Wigan at least until the winter."

This is certainly not the message that the Latics supporters or Roberto Martinez will want to hear after the 2-0 victory over Aston Villa.

The club do however have many options both defensively and in midfield, and even given Scharner undoubted ability, it could well be time for the 29 year old to move on.
