Scharner spent two years with West Brom but was released at the end of his contract last season. Now he is hoping to sort out a move to another club in the Premier League.

“I am hoping very much to stay in England,” he told the Evening Post.

“I have spent six-and-a-half very happy years here since joining Wigan, and I have made a lot of friends in the game. I made my name here, and I’ve made more than 200 games in the Premier League.

“I would be sad to have to go and it would be hard, but I also know that anything is possible and I may have to move elsewhere.”

The 32 year old Austrian international spent four and a half years with the Latics, a time he remembers well.

He added: “Of course I still care about Wigan Athletic – I spent four-and-a-half happy years there and I still look out for their fortunes.

“I very much hope Roberto Martinez stays at the club. The team did very well towards the back end of last season and I hope they can keep that going into next season.”
