Paul Scharner: Happy with the club
Since the arrival of Steve Bruce before Christmas, Scharner has flourished in his role as a centre back and put in a man-of-the-match performance on Saturday and capped it off with the opening goal of the 2-0 victory.

The pacey Austrian is quoted in the Manchester Evening News: "My goal against Derby was my fifth for the season and it is always a target to score in a game.

I scored four goals in the season when I arrived, I got three last year so I am pleased to have bettered that figure and hopefully there will be more because I am happy. My latest one was a poacher's goal.

"I am really happy for the team that we won and the three points are very important as we try to stay in this League. I am sure we can kick-off from this. It was so important to pick up all three points on Saturday.

"Even though Derby have not won a game for such a long time, it was always going to be difficult.

"I am enjoying how things are going and moving back to centre-half has not been a problem for me. We are determined to stay up and naturally I was pleased to be among the goals again.

"It was also nice to see Antonio Valencia scoring the second goal and at 2-0 we knew Derby would not come back. We are now looking for a strong finish to the season and I just want to do my bit."

Meanwhile, striker Emile Heskey is hoping to get his season back on track after a stop-start time to date with injuries repeatedly holding the England international forward back.

Heskey told the Wigan Evening Post: "Even at this stage of the season, I feel I haven't really played. It started off so well but then I got the setback of breaking my foot and I've never really come back properly. I'd play a couple of games and then something else would happen.

"It's been a season to forget so far, but I'm not writing it off because we still have a lot of important games to come. This is the first season I have had serious injury problems. It has seemed to be one after another which has been frustrating.

"Getting out on the pitch is my aim. I definitely think I can play a big part in the last 11 games, hopefully get some goals and provide others for the lads. There are some winnable games coming up - we have to have a positive attitude.

"We want to be safe before the last game of the season against Manchester United, and I think we can be."
