Scharner delighted with Chelsea win

It was the 35th time of asking, but the Latics have finally beaten one of the big four, and in style too. Not only did Bob's men win the game, but they dominated table topping Chelsea from start to finish.

Scharner told the club's official website: "I think I've played around 20 games against the top-four now and never got a win so I was very, very pleased with the result; first of all for the supporters and secondly for the whole team," said Scharner.

"We all worked very hard and everyone was on top of their game, so I think we deserved the win.

"It was disappointing we allowed them to get the equaliser, but five minutes later we went up the other end, won a penalty, and they had a man sent off. That was the moment that decided the game really.

"We had to wait a long time for the penalty to be taken which was a bit of a distraction, but in the end I was glad Hugo (Rodallega) stepped up and put it away."

Scharner himself also got on the scoresheet, adding the third as the game closed out. The goal, a tap in from Maynor Figueroa's shot-cum-cross put the game beyond doubt.

Scharner added: "I actually apologised to Maynor after the goal because I think that even without my touch it would have gone in. He played extremely well and made an excellent move to get into the area and create the opportunity."

There was also praise for the new manager Roberto Martinez. Although things take time, Scharner is delighted with the new boss. He added: "It's always difficult when you bring in a new manager with a new philosophy, and it needs a bit of time to get working.

"In football if you go three or four games with no results people want to know why and what's going on. But when you're changing your way of playing to a style that means keeping more possession it doesn't click overnight.

"But you could see that things worked against Chelsea, and if we can do the same against other teams it will be a very good season."
