Roberts bid rejected

First Again... Wiganer.net reported Wigan's interest in Roberts on the 2nd of July, more than a month ago. Click here.

However West Brom have claimed that the offer is not nearly enough to take the hit man to Wigan.

Jason Roberts
Roberts, 25, has already expressed his desire to leave the Hawthorns, but is contracted unitl 2006 and so the club are determined to get a good price for him.

The Baggies signed Rob Hulse from Crewe, and Artim Sakiri, the Macedonian international over the summer and so have no shortage of strikers.

Charlton, Everton and Blackburn have all expressed strong interest in taking the forward on loan, but West Brom have ruled out a loan deal. These Premiership teams would seemingly only be interested in Roberts as a short-term measure.

Albion chairman Jeremy Peace said: "To reiterate what we've said on many occasions, we only accepted Jason's written transfer request reluctantly.

"Jason is contracted to this club until 2006 and we believe he is a player with outstanding potential.

"Therefore, we will only sell him if an acceptable offer is forthcoming.

"We have never named a price for Jason to any club but Wigan's bid is not even remotely in the ball park for what we would accept.

"To repeat what the manager said only last week, there are two options. We either receive an acceptable offer for Jason and, if he wishes, he can leave - or he fights for his place and continues to fulfil his responsibility to the club, as he has publicly stated he will."

£1.5 million for a player of Roberts stature is a fair valuation. At most I would rise to £2 million, but the Baggies are rumoured to be quoting £4 million which is just silly money, and this should be ignored.

On the playing side of things, Roberts would be a tremendous signing and would certainly enjoying renewing his old Bristol Rovers partnership with Nathan Ellington.

Meanwhile Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has added: "An offer has been made and Roberts is keen to come and play for Wigan.

"He is great mates with Nathan Ellington - they played together before and want to team up again. But I don't plan to increase the offer."
