Reading Countdown: Kirkland hoping to maintain form

Kirkland has been in impressive form of late and had England qualified for the European Championships this summer, he would have been pushing David James all the way for the number 1 shirt.

However, the 26 year old is delighted with his progress under the stewardship of Steve Bruce and new goalkeeping coach Nigel Spink.

Kirkland told the Wigan Observer: "If we stay up it's the best I've played in my career. If we do it I'll be absolutely delighted with how it's gone for me this season.

"This is what we've worked hard for - it's going to be a hell of a game on Saturday. We will give it everything we've got. Hopefully there will be a lot of smiles at the final whistle."

Kirkland has also been pleased with the home form shown by the Latics, with opposing sides scoring just one goal in six games at the JJB. A record that has helped the club win four of the last six at home.

He added: "In the last six at home we've won four, drawn two and only conceded one. If we keep that going we will be okay. The fans can give us a real lift and that's what we'll need.

"With the situation Reading are in they've got to go for it as well. I had a bad game at Reading. I should have saved the first one and hopefully I can put it right this Saturday.

"All this hard work won't mean anything unless we stay up."
