Ponce is desperate to get his big move the Premier league but his club, Velez Starsfield are determined to hang on to their influential defender.

Club president Fernando Raffaini said: "If Ponce signs a contract with Wigan, we are going to forbid the transfer and report Wigan to FIFA.

"We have already ordered Ponce to show up here and attend training sessions with his team-mates, but he never made any reply to us."

Ponce himself meanwhile has confirmed his desire to play for the Latics. He said: "What is left in my career is to play in Europe. I think this is the right moment for moving."

It is rumoured that the defender has gone AWOL from Velez training in a bid to earn his move to Europe.
