Sunday 26th February was the day Mike Pollitts career was to come full circle. After being released by Manchester United as a youngster, Pollitt found himself up against his former pay masters in the biggest game of his career.

Sadly, the former Rotheram custodian endured a nightmare Carling Cup final when he was forced off after 14 minutes with a hamstring injury.
John Filan getz his chance to impress

The news that he faces a month on the sideline is a major blow to Pollitt as he had firmly established himself as number one at the JJB Stadium, and had become a firm fans favourite.

The £100,000 signing, one of the bargains of the season, had reclaimed the number one shirt after John Filan got injured. Politt won numerous man of the match awards, especially in the carling Cup semi final at Arsenal, when Pollitt's numerous wonder saves, including a saved penalty, earned him legendary status with the Wigan fans.

John Filan, still not 100% fit, will continue to deputise for Pollitt and will hope to do enough to stake a claim for the goalkeepers spot when Pollitt gets back to full fitness.

Sticking with the goalkeeping theme, Paul jewell has rejected talk linking him with a move for Bolton's Jussi Jaaskelainen.

The Finn has just 18 months to run on his present contract and Jaaskelainen has yet to sign a new deal at Bolton, which has led to Sam Allrdyce admitting he may have to be sold if he does not agree a new contract.

Despite being linked as possible suitors, jewell said: "We haven't made a bid for Jaaskelainen or spoken about him"
