Pollit retires from playing staff to focus on coaching role

The 42 year old goalkeeper joined the Latics upon promotion to the Premier League back in 2005 and is the club's current longest serving player.

The former Manchester United trainee will now become the club's goalkeeping coach, suceeding Phil Hughes.

Manager Uwe Rosler is optimisitic about the appointment and he told the Wigan Evening Post: "I like to work with young players and give young players their chane, and that also goes for young coaches.

"Polly has a wealth of experience from his playing days, and he has benefitted from several different coaching techniues - from home and aborad.

"He is a good student of the game, he wants to improve, and we are giving him the chance to show what he can do. He had the opportunity to go to Bury in January , but I put a stop to that because I wanted to keep him.

"It's important to promote from within the club, because it sends the right message. I am looking forwar to seeing how it will go and I'm very confident Polly will be an important figure for us moving forward."

Rosler went on to confirm that Pollitt will no longer remain on the playing staff at the club and will instead focus on his new post as head goalkeeping coach.
