Police Bill: The Latest

Last updated : 28 January 2005 By Paul Farrington
Dave Whelan: Standing Firm
The debt to the Police stands at around £200,000 but Whelan is unhappy after seeing what other clubs in the local area are charged for policing of their games.

The issue has also been raised to the local council and sports minister Richard Caborn and a meeting has now been arranged with Greater Manchester Police to finally get the problem sorted.

Whelan said: "I have been speaking with Lord Peter Smith, the leader of Wigan Council, and he now feels it is best for me to speak with GMP.

"I want to do this. The town's two MPs have also taken up the matter with the Home Office and with the sports minister Richard Caborn.

"We have received a letter from GMP, but I will be having talks with Chief Superintendent Ian Harrison and will be looking to get the matter sorted.

"The football club simply need fairness and all we are asking for and looking for his co-operation.

"I look forward to the meeting because this matter needs to be sorted out as soon as possible."
