With this summer's break being longer than others due to the World Cup, Paul Jewell has requested the attendance of his players at the training session.

He told the Wigan Evening Post: "The break is a little bit longer this summer so we decided to have the lads back in either this week or next for a workout.

"They'll then get a couple of weeks' more holiday before we start pre-season training at the beginning of next month.

"All the lads have had fitness programmes to keep to while they've been away, and these few days of training will just mean we can get into them quicker when training starts properly.

"We did a bit of football work yesterday, and we'll also be in the gym doing some strengthening work this week.

"After the season finished, the lads were advised to have a couple of weeks break, relax a bit, and then start some work – swimming, strengthening and going for a run.

"They've all done that because they're good athletes and very professional, and this extra work is something which can prolong their career.

"It's not like years gone by when players didn't do anything in the summer, came back a few pounds overweight and spent four or five weeks trying to lose it."
