The Welsh international forward has played a number of games for the reserves and Paul Jewell felt he was ready for the step up when Gary Teale needed to come off injured before the break.

Jewell said: "I was pleased for David, he showed a lot of quality and gave them problems down that side. It hasn't been easy for him since he came here, it's a big step up, but he has got his chance and taken it well.

"He looked confident and will do well for us this season. There were some great performances out there."

Cotterill himself was delighted to get the opportunity, he said: "I was just thrilled to get my chance; I don't mind where I play. We prepared for a tough game and got it but we also got the points."

Jewell also took time to praise his goal hero Lee McCulloch and new boys Andy Webster and Emmerson Boyce. He added: "I was pleased for Lee to score the goal, it was well worked and well finished.

"Andy Webster is getting better as the weeks go by, Emmerson Boyce had his best game for us, while Arjan de Zeeuw was a colossus. It wasn't pure football, but we worked exceptionally hard."

The 1-0 in over neighbours Bolton was a great result for the Latics, giving them a third win on the bounce and propelling the side upto 10th in the table with a game in hand on many of the sides above them.

Next up is Charlton Athletic at home on Saturday 11th November.
