PJ confirms Aki inquiry

Ade Akinbiyi
The 30 year old striker told the world via his official website that both ourselves and Sheffield United had launched bids for him.

This was untrue as only the Blades had put a bid in writing for the former Leicester City and Gillingham frontman.

Jewell said:"I see that we've been linked with Ade Akinbiyi and though that hasn't come out from our end, I can confirm that I have enquired about him. I've spoken to Tony Pulis and am now mulling over an offer, but I should also say that he's just one of two or three strikers we're looking at.

"I'm happy with the squad I have here but would like to strengthen all over the park if I can and that is what I'm trying to do. A new striker to compliment Jason Roberts, Nathan Ellington and David Graham is just one part of that and basically the situation with these three potential signings is ongoing.

"In my mind they are all decent players, I try not to sign bad ones, but we shall have to wait and see what happens as a result of these enquiries. Just because we have a two week break it doesn't necessarily mean that we have increased our activities regarding bringing people in though.

"Basically the situation is permanently being monitored because I believe that you should build when in a position of strength and where we are at the moment isn't a bad one from which to add to the squad if we can.

"The only problem that we do encounter from time to time is that quite often a club we approach appears to want one price from Wigan Athletic and another from all the other clubs. That's the unfortunate thing about the Chairman having the money he has because, although it means we are in the lucky position in terms of having money to spend, sometimes clubs demand more from us than we are willing to spend on certain individuals.

"We set a price we are willing to pay for a player but are not just going to go out and pay whatever figure is demanded from us because I do not feel that is the right way to go about things."

Akinbiyi has manged to score 7 goals so far this season for the Potters, these have come in 30 appearances. He scored in Stoke's 3-2 victory over Ipswich Town at the Britannia Stadium on the 14th of September. However he has not scored in his past seven games for Stoke who have managed only 6 goals in their past 20 games.
