No transfer activity... yet

The Latics manager today asked for patience from the fans as they await the first signing.

He told the Wigan Evening Post: "I won't be rushing into any signing because the people we bring into this club have to be the right ones.

"We did make an offer for a player the other week – a quite considerable offer – but it didn't happen and the lad is going to go elsewhere.

"What we must remember is although we are a Premiership club now, we are competing and fighting with well established Premiership teams to get players.

"We've all got to be patient. I sometimes get impatient with the lack of movement but please, trust me, we are working extremely hard.

"One of us was in Spain the other weekend to watch matches and we'll leave no stone unturned."

It is common knowledge that the promoted sides tend to buy a large number of players upon gaining promotion and it was expected that Jewell would pull off some major signings over the summer.

He has been promised a large budjet by the chairman, Dave Whelan, and as with signings in the past, he is being very shrewd.

Darren Bent: Rumoured to be chased by the Latics before his move to Charlton this week.
Darren Bent [right] is rumoured to be the player mentioned above, however, he moved to Charlton Athletic on Wednesday for a fee of around £3 million.

Jewell did however rule out moves for the Everton trio of Steve Watson, Alan Stubbs and Leon Osman, he said: "These are not players we will be signing."

And it seems that since the club gained promotion the manager has been flooded with offers from agents.

He said: "Since we got promoted the phone has never stopped ringing and we've had hundreds of calls offering players from agents.

"There's not been much movement yet in the transfer market from any club because players tend to be away on holiday at the moment.

"We are working hard to bring in new players and I would like them in ready to start pre-season training."

Supporters hope that the club will bring in a few players though. The Latics squad at present is very small and in need of a good number of trusted Premiership players.

Despite there being no additions to the first team after seasling promotion to the Championship, everyone connected with the club knows that this cannot be the case this year.
