No Smoking Stadium

Last updated : 29 November 2005 By Paul Farrington
A number of other Premiership clubs have already banned the disgusting habit from their stadia and the Latics have been quick to follow suit.

Over the summer the move was made that smoking would only be permitted on the concourse and not in the seated areas themselves. This move served to highlight just how foul a habit smoking really is with the concourses earning the nickname 'cancer alley.'

Chairman Dave Whelan and Chief Executive Brenda Spencer are putting hteir full support behind the move.

Mr Whelan told the club's official website: "I think that it will improve the overall comfort of the majority of the public coming to the JJB. The concourse areas become very smoky when there are several thousand people in each stand, which is a problem which affects most major sporting venues.

"We feel this is a very important issue and it has now been addressed. The safety and comfort of our customers is of paramount importance to myself, Brenda and everyone at the club. I am sure this move will be welcomed by the majority of people attending events at the stadium."

Whilst Brenda Spencer added: "In line with many other Premiership clubs who have taken similar steps, and in the interests of the comfort and health and safety of all the fans who come to watch football at the JJB, we have decided to make the stadium no-smoking. We are confident that most people will support the idea.

"There have been a number of complaints from members of the public about the smoke in the concourse areas during matches and we feel this is the right move forwards."
