42 year old Pollitt has now officially retired from the playing staff with the Latics and has moved into a coaching role.

Youngster Lee Nicholls has looked up to Pollitt since joining the club as a 16 year old and is looking forward to working with the former Rotherham United player.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Nicholls said: "Ever since I joined Wigan as a 16-year-old I’ve always looked up to Polly, admired his work-rate and the way he goes about his work."

“It’s great to still have him at the club and hopefully I can continue to learn off him. He was a bit of a father figure to us all even when he was playing, and he’ll still be there for us to dish out advice.

“Obviously it’s going to be different now he’s the gaffer. It might be a bit weird to start with, but it won’t make that much difference.

“It’s been great working with him down the years and even more so now he’s going to be the boss.”

Nicholls will face a battle for a first team spot this season with Scott Carson and Ali Al Habsi.
