The former FC Porto manager and Champions League winner has been reccomending players to Jewell, from his native Portugal.

"He's a very nice man," Jewell told The Times. "I know people think he is arrogant, but as far as I can see he is just very confident.

"We spoke at the end of the season and he congratulated me on what a great achievement it had been to get Wigan into the Premiership, and we complimented each other on the success we'd had.

"I've talked with him a few times now and he's very supportive. A couple of weeks ago, he gave me a full rundown of players in Portugal, who he rated and recommended. He's very knowledgeable."

Portuguese starlet Ze Castro, 22, of Academica Coimbra is believed to be another recomendation from Mourinho.

Ze Castro is a defender as is said to be valued in the region of 1.3 million pounds by his club.

Whilst the Latics have also been linked with a move for Rangers full back Maurice Ross who has recently turned down a move to Sheffield Wednesday.

David Belamdi is also on trial at the JJB and is hoping to earn himself a contract after Celtic told him they did not require his services.
