The JJB supremo and Latics hero told the Wigan Observer: "It's true that I will be paying one million pounds to the players if we win promotion.

"It is the bonus clause which we agreed at the start of the season. This is not something that I've just decided now because we're so close to gettign promoted.

"You must report it to the Football League before the season starts which we did. It's all done and it's above board.

"Each and every club can give the players whatever bonus they want. It's got the be in the contract at the start of the season and the Football League have got to know."

The money will be divided up based on appearances with each appearance likely to be worth £1,811. This means that ever present players (Bullard, Filan, Baines) stand to make £83,306 should they not leave the first eleven before the end of the season.

Whelan continued: "It's got to work on appearances. The players making mroe appearances will get more money which is fair.

"The one million pounds will be divided to the players in the first eleven and the substitutes will get half when they make an appearance."
