Melchiot to play with broken nose

With Liverpool and Manchester United already knocked out of the competition, Notts County and Sven Goren Eriksson can certainly be considered a banan skin for the Latics.

And manager Roberto Martinez is determined to buck a recent Latics trend and put on a good show in the famous old competition. So much so he is going to play his strongest side for the trip to Nottingham, despite facing Blackburn Rovers on Wednesday in a vital Premier League game.

Despite suffering a broken nose in the 2-0 victory over Wolves, captain Mario Melchiot is going to play against County in a mask.

The Latics boss praised his captains determination. He said: "Mario is setting the right example as skipper of the club. It will take a lot more than that to keep him away from the pitch.

"It is a straight fracture, it hasn't stopped him training, and he will play with a mask. He should be fine, which is great news."
