Melchiot joined the club under Hutchings stewardship when he arrived on a free transfer from French club Rennes in the summer. He was quickly appointed captain of the team and has gone on to impress at right full back so far this term.

The Dutch international defender who turned 31 on Sunday said: "It is a matter for the club, the club made its decision and you just have to put yourself out of it.

"Everybody knew what work he did and how long [Hutchings] had been at this club. Somebody special to me has left but as a professional you have to keep going and that is what I definitely will do.

"As soon as the new person comes in, whoever it may be, is going to be the best thing for the club and for the group as well, because it makes a more settled group.

"I've been in this situation at Chelsea when [Gianluca Vialli] left, it's not the greatest time at the club. But besides that this is football and sometimes you have got to live with it and try to move on.

"The most important thing is we stick together. All the people outside [the club] are wondering what is going on and what is happening and the best thing for us is to stick together and do the best that we can."

Names being linked with the post include former boss Paul Jewell, Joe Royle, once of Manchester City and Steve Cotterill who today left the Yorkshire club Burnley by mutual consent.
