"It's always sad when a player of Steve's ability retires, because he has never really been able to show his true potential. I never had any doubt in my mind that Steve was a Premiership standard footballer and it's just such a shame he was never ever able to truly prove it to the Wigan fans.

"Steve has battled though the pain barrier many times over the past year and he's done everything in his power to get back playing. I would like to send the best wishes of myself, my staff and all the players to a great professional."

"Steve really helped me out during the past year. We helped each other. When one was low, the other one perked him up and I can honestly say that I don't know if I'd have come back when I did were it not for Steve.

"He's a top bloke and all the players are gutted for him because his example shows us all the potential risks we take. It's going to be strange not having him around the place."
