Rangers first attempted to sign McCulloch in January, but had two offers knocked back. An improved bid of £2.25million was enough to persuade Wigan to accept, with McCulloch travelling to Rangers last night to complete his "dream" move.

After signing, McCulloch spoke to Wigan's official website, thanking everyone involved for six great years at Wigan.

He said: "I really hope the Wigan fans understand why I've gone because, really, I can't thank everyone down there enough for the way they treated me these past six years, and for the great times I've had at Wigan.

"To sign for Rangers is a dream, but i have to pay a massive tribute to Wigan, because without everything that has happened there, i would never have been able to make this move.

"The journey from Division Two to the Premiership was an absolutely amazing one, and of course it also allowed me to get my Scotland caps.

"I wish i could have had the chance to say goodbye to the Wigan fans properly because when you have a stadium of people chanting your name, that really leaves a big impression on you as a person and it's not something i'll forget."

McCulloch, who's last act as a Wigan player was to get sent off against Sheffield United, signed a four-year deal with Rangers, and said of the move: "I'm delighted to come to such a massive club," he told the club's official website. "I'm here to play for the badge."

With McCulloch leaving, that left the number ten shirt vacant, but only for a few hours as new signing Jason Koumas, a £5.3million signing from West Brom, claimedthe shirt as his own.

Thanks to number ten McCulloch for all the memories, welcome number ten Koumas.
