The Latics have a notoriously difficult time of things at the Theatre of Dreams, but Roberto Martinez may certainly have a trick or two up his sleave.
With United struggling for form this season, the Spaniard is hopeful of picking up a result. He told the Wigan Evening Post: “When we play against United it must not be about them, it’s about ourselves.
“We need to find a way to work hard, and obviously enjoy the occasion, but it’s all about what we can produce.
“If you look at our record against United we’ve never even got a point, but my biggest concern is for us to be prepared mentally and to be ready to play against a fantastic team.”
The game could also see the return of Wayne Rooney for United. The England striker has spent some time in the United States as rumours over his personal life clearly started to affect his football.
Martinez however refused to be drawn into the discussion, recognising that Manchester United are about more than just one player.
“Whether Ronney plays or not doesn’t matter," added the Latics boss. “Our problems in the past have been bigger than just one player.
“We’ve not had that belief and that’s probably the main barrier we’ll have to overcome tomorrow. In my eyes all our focus needs to go into being ourselves, and to be able to go to Old Trafford and compete for 95 minutes.
“They’ll be confident, but if we can break down that mental barrier I won’t be concerned with anything else. Away from home we have been strong, solid and we’ve defended well."
What the Latics boss did say, was that he believes the game will hinge on the mental strength of the respective sides, a battle he is confident his team can win.
“In a way it is going to be a mental war, but we have got strong characters in the squad and that can help us go and try and get a result," added the Spaniard.
