Martinez praise for Rodallega

Rodallega, a £4.5m capture from Mexican side Necaxa is being tipped for a good season with the Latics and Martinez was full of praise for the striker.

He said: "From my first day at Wigan it was clear that he was a special player. He has got everything. You look at him and he has got that killer instinct that a striker needs.

"He is strong in the air, he is very mobile, he has very clever movement, his first touch is outstanding so when you speak about Hugo it is very hard to think of a weakness in his play.

"I always felt the way that he is as a player means that he can fit into the British way of playing really well. He can play in various positions and is not predictable in his movement as can be the case with some strikers.

"Also, the winning mentality he has is very contagious out there. He has no fear whatsoever and all the ingredients you are looking for in a special striker Hugo has got them.

"But it is only one game and we have to make sure now that he keeps his standards as high as he can. Hugo is someone who a couple of Spanish clubs were looking at before he moved to Wigan.

"The South and Central American markets are probably the best ones for the Spanish League, so I was aware of Hugo but you don't realise how he is as a person, first and foremost, and as a player until you work with them.

"He is someone who surprises you every day in training with something different. He is not the sort of player to set personal targets, though, because he is the kind of person who would prefer his personal success to be down to the team's success.

"He wants Wigan Athletic to be succesful and he wants to help towards that."
