Martinez optimistic ahead of United test

So far the record against Manchester United does not make pretty reading as the Latics have lost all fourteen of their previous Premier League encounters.

However with United coasting at the top of the table, and the Latics in a purple patch of form, Roberto Martinez is hopeful of picking up three points against Sir Alex Ferguson's men.

“We know it will be difficult because Manchester United are playing for the title and they are a very strong and experienced outfit,” Martinez told the Evening Post.

“But in many ways it is a great opportunity for us to beat them and break that stat.

“We were left with such a feeling of disappointment at Chelsea last weekend, but in moments like this we need to remain as tight as ever both on and off the field.

“There are so many injustices outside the football club that we need to keep the togetherness that we have within as strong as ever.

“For the fans to be there when we all arrive at the stadium, it has an amazing effect on the players. And if we can perform tonight in the manner we did on Saturday, who knows what could happen?

“Maybe this time we might not play as well and end up with the points. Maybe football owes us a result.”

Meanwhile the Football Association have confirmed that Martinez will not face disciplinary action following his comments after the Chelsea game.
