Martinez looking to add to squad

Available on a free transfer after his contract at Marseille expired, M'bami has apparently impressed Martinez and could be offered a contract this week to add more bite in the centre of midfield. M'bami is still only 26 but injury problems have plagued his career restricting him making more appearances for the French club. One of the more high profile players currently available on a free transfer, M'bami has been on trial with the club after a brief spell at Portsmouth and now looks set to be given his chance to play in the Premier League after spending all of his career in France.

Celtic striker Scott McDonald was the subject of a season-long loan offer on transfer deadline day from Wigan but this was rejected out of hand due to McDonald's importance to Celtic's first team. An improved offer may be placed in January when the window re-opens, this time Martinez may go for a permanent deal to try and get his man. Speaking to the Wigan Observer, Martinez said,

"There were many players we showed interest in, and Scott McDonald was one of them.
"I wanted to add to the squad with a couple of signings as we are a bit thin on numbers.

"We have our targets and we will carry on following and assessing them because if you are going to do that then I think it is vitally important that assessment continues.
"When you bring a player in you have to be certain that he brings you exactly what you want in terms of his personality, character and what he has to offer.

"I will continue to work hard to identify the right players to improve our squad.

"But although I was actively searching, I wasn't going to bring anybody in just to beat the transfer window.
"I don't work like that; I've got too much pride in the players I've got here."

West Ham are the visitors to the DW on Saturday with Martinez looking to secure his first win at the DW Stadium against Gianfranco Zola's side.
