Martinez in newspaper rift

Last updated : 28 October 2009 By Michael Goodman

Despite being one of the most respected young managers in the game, Martinez has been targeted by a Spanish newspaper discussing the recent issue over Ferguson and referee Alan Wiley. Martinez was quoted as saying that Ferguson has too much power in the game and if any other manager made the comments about Wiley’s fitness, they would have had the book thrown at them. The article also stated the ‘bully’ tactics used by other Premier League managers to hit on Rafa Benitez. Sam Allardyce and Steve Bruce were named here.

Martinez however, was quick to deny these claims and a statement was released through the LMA website. "Wigan Athletic manager, Roberto Martinez, has categorically denied making the comments about Sir Alex Ferguson that have been attributed to him in a number of media reports.

"Martinez has referred the matter to the League Managers Association."
