The former Hamilton midfielder put in a heroic performance against Bolton Wanderers alongside another former Hamilton player in James McCarthy.

The young duo dictated play and worked tirelessly, both defensively and offensively. With Diame out of contract in the summer, the performance of McArthur proved their wil be life after the Senegal international.

It was perhaps unsurprising to hear Roberto Martinez single of McArthur for special praise following the game.

Speaking to the club's official website, Martinez said: "James McArthur is in a great spell at the moment and has performed very well in his last three games, scoring two times now.

"He and the rest of the team showed a reaction you don't expect from a group who are bottom of the league which was very pleasing."

There was also praise for Gary Caldwell who banished the memories of last season's dire performance at the Reebok Stadium.

"Gary's roles as skipper had extra importance today; he had to be vocal and organise people at the back because you know Bolton are going to be direct and hope for the ball to drop their way in your half," added Martinez.

"He was an example to any youngster who wants to be a leader on the pitch."
