Martinez getting frustrated with defensive frailties

Last updated : 27 December 2009 By Paul Farrington

This time it was the fault of Hendry Thomas who left Benni McCarthy unmarked to tap home from just five yards out. The Honduran international midfielder was caught ball watching on the edge of the area as McCarthy tapped home to give Rovers the lead.

Whilst on this occasion the finger can be pointed at Thomas, the entire team can take the blame over the course of the season so far with the Latics proving too easy to score against.

This soft underbelly is starting to cost the Latics too many points and is having a bad effect on the league table. Martinez is likely to have a very busy January both in terms of player movement, but also time on the training ground to remedy the defensive problems.

Speaking about the game against Blackburn, the Latics boss told the club's official website: "There have been a few occasions where we've lacked a little concentration from set-pieces, but after conceding the goal we grabbed the game by with both hands and could have won the game.

"But we finished the game strong, showed the right personality and maturity to earn a win and I'm pleased with that aspect, hopefully it will prove to be a turning point in our season."

The annoying thing is that Martinez seems to be placing too many plaudits on the positive football which is rendered useless when, for ten or fifteen minutes in each game, we switch off and conceed sloppy goals.

Martinez continued: "When you play at home you want to take the responsibility and take the three points. I think in the first-half we were not up to our standards and we made it difficult for ourselves.

"In the second we reacted in the right way, imposed ourselves on Blackburn, and created chance after chance. As a result it took them until the 80th minute to threaten our goal.

"So we're pleased with that but it's similar to our recent games where we haven't shown the right know-how to take chances and make sure we get points our performances deserve.

"Blackburn played a very direct game, and have a huge advantage of being able to score when they're not completely dominating a game, which is a big strength.

"But I was pleased with the players' attitude and reaction in the second-half, and we'll carry on improving in the areas we know we need to, and I'm sure that we'll soon start getting the points we deserve."

Should the Latics manage to improve their defence, then Martinez has the makings of a good team, otherwise, it could be a long few months to May.
