Manchester United Preview: Wigan to have say again

Last updated : 12 May 2009 By Michael Goodman

Manchester United are taking the headlines once again when it comes to the Premier League. If they win at the JJB on Wednesday and get at least a point against Arsenal on Saturday, they will be champions once again. Sir Alex Ferguson has definitely built a side which can challenge in every competition, domestic or continental.

The champions jetted off to Japan in December for the Club World Cup and returned victorious in what has been described as a joke competition, this is harsh. Everybody knows that Europe has the best players in the world but it is a case of showcasing the talents which the continent has to offer. To be crowned 'World Champions' is a title which every club would want to have that's for sure.

When Wigan went to Old Trafford back in January, the team gave United a run for their money once again despite a 1-0 defeat. A little bit of luck could easily seen a point or three taken but that has gone and Wednesday is a chance for Wigan to claim an unexpected victory.

Changes are expected to be made by United but with a squad which has quality and depth throughout, the game will certainly be tough. Wigan are now on a 5 game winless run and have only scored 2 goals in that time. On the bright side, Hugo Rodallega grabbed his first goal for the club so hopefully that will kick start the Colombian in his quest for goals.

Chris Kirkland is a huge doubt after coming off in the game to West Brom with problems with his back, Richard Kingson will step in if Kirkland is not fit to play. Amr Zaki is a definite absentee after his season was ended after suspected knee ligament damage. Mido may be fit to start after missing the game last Saturday, if not, Olivier Kapo is expected to continue up front alongside Rodallega.

Key Players for Manchester United

Edwin Van Der Sar - Van Der Sar has written himself into the history books by keeping a record of 14 clean sheets. He faces stiff competition from Ben Foster who may play on Wednesday to give the Dutchman a rest. A 'keeper with huge amounts of experience.

Nemanja Vidic - One of the best defenders in the world at the minute. Vidic has become a rock at the heart of the United defence and it will be hard for any United player to oust him from his position.

Ryan Giggs- The player of the year and rightly so. Giggs is the ultimate professional and deserves his award for always setting a good example and giving 100% every game. Some may argue that Giggs has only played a handful of games but when he has played he makes a huge difference with his passing, tackling and shooting.

Cristiano Ronaldo - Ronaldo is a player who's arrogance makes him the world class professional he is today. His ability on the ball is fantastic and for Sir Alex Ferguson to find him and develop him into the player he is today shows just what a great manager he is. Has the tendency to become lazy but can change a game in a flash.

WIGANER.net Prediction

A Wigan win would be spectacular but again it just seems very unlikely. Manchester United have too much and a draw is probably the best the team can hope for, especially given recent form. The home fans will be needed to make a hostile atmosphere as they have the ability to when the team needs them so get behind the team. You never know.
