Manchester United Preview: Can lightning strike twice?

Last updated : 20 August 2009 By Michael Goodman

Not many people would have expected Burnley to beat United on Wednesday night but beat them they did. This just shows what football can be like. Burnley playing in their second ever Premier League game and end up beating the champions on their home turf.

Wigan are now in their 5th season in the division and have yet to record a league win over any of the 'top 4'. It can be a cruel game sometimes.

A big summer for the champions saw the departures of Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez. Big blows for the team who are looking to retain their title for a record 4th time in a row.

Sir Alex Ferguson has spent some of the cash received from the record £80m sale of Ronaldo, Antonio Valencia cost £16m, Gabriel Obertan cost around £5m and Michael Owen was a free signing.

It will take time for the club to adjust to the loss of two key players and that could se them miss out on the Premier League crown.

Roberto Martinez will want to see an improvement from the loss against Wolves on Tuesday with tiredness the reason for the defeat. Martinez is still looking to add to the squad with a number of players linked with moves as the transfer window draws closer to the end.

A new manager will hopefully see a first three points against a 'top 4' side and give the champions two defeats in three games. If this happens, the town will be buzzing.

Wigan Team News

Antonio Amaya could take a place on the bench after receiving international clearance but Martinez could name an unchanged side for the match. Charles N'Zogbia and Chris Kirkland recovered from knocks in time to face Wolves and are expected to be in the line-up on Saturday.

Key Players for Manchester United

Wayne Rooney - Rooney is a threat in every single game he plays in. The former Everton striker is known for his work rate, scoring spectacular goals and also his extremely clever link up play with whoever plays up front with him. Looking to score 100 league goals for United

Michael Owen - Everyone knows the curse of Wigan Athletic in the Premier League and it could well continue on Saturday. So many players have bagged their first goals for their clubs against Latics with Peter Crouch, Salomon Kalou, Rio Ferdinand and Andy Johnson join a long list of players opening their tally against Wigan. Will be a huge threat.

Antonio Valencia - Has yet to really settle at Old Trafford and will want to impress against his former club. Valencia has pace and is very direct when he wants to be. Not the most prolific goal scoring midfielder but can chip in with a few goals. Maynor will be in for a tough afternoon.

WIGANER.net Prediction

United will come to win and will look to score whenever they have the ball. The game will be very different from the Wolves game with both sides capable of playing football. An optomistic draw is not out of the question.
