Let the Martinez era begin!

Sky Sports News broke the story on Monday night that Martinez had finally signed his 3-year-deal and this has given Wigan fans plenty to be happy about. The gloom of Steve Bruce's departure to Sunderland was short-lived as soon as Roberto was installed as favourite for the post.

The move will bring back a lot of memories from 1995 when the arrival of Martinez, Jesus Seba and Isidro Diaz really put Wigan in the headlines. Now, a new chapter is about to begin and the highly rated new boss will have fans eagerly anticipating the new signings and attractive football that Roberto will bring to the club.

In an interview with Sky Sports News, Chairman Dave Whelan confirmed that the club has already made a bid for two players and one of the bids in question has been accepted. This is reportedly Jordi Gomez who Martinez wants to bring to the DW after a number of rave reviews playing under Martinez at Swansea.

"I asked him (Martinez) on Saturday for a priority list of players and he gave us four priorities," Whelan told Sky Sports News.

"We have already made a bid for one, which I think has been accepted, so we are on the case. It's a player from the Spanish league.

"I have promised Roberto that we will back him right down the line, so we have got an exciting season coming up that's for sure."

It will be an exciting summer with many fans now looking forward to the big kick off in August. It will be a very tough start for Martinez though with the Spaniard facing Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester United, Manchester City and Everton all in his first few games. Whelan though has confirmed that he has total faith in Martinez and will never sack the former Swansea boss, even if Wigan were to be relegated. Hopefully Martinez will be a huge hit at the club and lead the town into Europe during his hopefully long tenure at the club.
