Emile Heskey
...will not break their current wage structure to attract the player.

Hutchings said: "We are interested in Heskey but so are Blackburn and Portsmouth as well so it depends on how much the player wants.

"We have money to spend but we are not going to overpay in the market but if you don't do that, sometimes you might not get the players."

Birmingham slapped an initial price of £5 million on the striker, a value laughed off by the chasing clubs.

The Latics are also said to be offering £4 million for Newcastle youngster James Milner and are said to be moving for Dutch international midfielder Denny Landzaat.

Manager Paul Jewell is currently working for BBC Five Live at the World Cup in Germany while performing scouting duties as he chases the right players for the club.

The manager has asked for patience from the fans as it takes time to bring in players who are right for Wigan Athletic Football Club.
