Latics wanted Monaco frontman

The Latics brought in two loan players on transfer deadline day as Stoke's Ryan Shotton and Manchester United's Nick Powell joined on six and twelve month loan deals respectively.

However Owen Coyle has revealed that he had hoped to pull off a significant signing of a forward player for the club and confirmed that the Latics lodged a £5 million offer for Monaco forward Emmanuel Riviere earlier in the window.

Speaking to Wigantoday.net Coyle said: “We did make offers for strikers, because I do think we’re short in that area, but it didn’t happen.

“There was one in particular, Emmanuel Riviere, who we bid five million euros for a couple of weeks ago. But it’s sod’s law that he started the season with five goals in three games which put paid to that.

“He got a hat-trick the other week, but even as late as Sunday there was a chance of it happening because they were chasing a lad at Atletico Madrid.

“We made our offer again, and he was only named on the bench against Marseille.

“I’m watching the game thinking: ‘Fine, just don’t put him on, we’ve still got a chance here.’

“But Falcao turned his ankle at 1-1, Riviere came on, left his two markers for dead and scored the winning goal against the top of the league!

“Claudio Ranieri rightly wants to keep him now, which I totally understand. If we could have brought him here it would have been an unbelievable signing for us."

Coyle is now expected to target the loan market again over the next few weeks with a brief window allowing Championship club's to target top flight players who missed out on moves.

The Latics boss added: “But we have other targets and we also have the loan market opening next week.”

Despite already having two loan players the Latics are allowed to bering in a total of five loan players, with two from any one club.

Liverpool's Andrew Wisdom has been linked but it is likely Coyle will be looking for an out-and-out striker to bolster his forward options.

Manchester United's Angelo Henriquez is being linked with a move back to the DW Stadium following. The Chilian spent time with the Latics last aseason but found first team opportunities is short supply.
