Latics move for Millers keeper

Pollitt, 33, has been an impress goalkeeper over the years in the lower divisions and will no doubt snap Jewell's hand off for a chance at the big time.

A fee has yet to be agreed but the club's are rumoured to be talking around the region of £150,000.

Jewell told the club's official site: "He is a player I'm interested in signing and we have made an approach. However, at the time we are still at the discussion stage."

The Latics boss also spoke of his recent frustration at trying to attract quality to the JJB.

Jewell is not interested in bringing players in who will add little to the squad. He has previously stated that he does not want ageing players who want one last pay day or big-time-charlies who are more concerned with going out of an evening than playing football. He wants players who will graft and improve the first team squad.

He added: "We bid over a million pounds more than three other Premiership clubs for this one player but we didn't even get to the speak to him because he wasn't interested in coming.

"When you're competing with Newcastle and Everton for a players signature it's understandable that the boy is more attracted to joining an established Premiership club. That's the challenge for me now, to make Wigan an established Premiership club and then signing top quality players becomes a lot easier."

That player is rumoured to be Scott Parker of Chelsea who now seems likely to join Newcastle in a deal worth £6.5 million. Meaning that the Latics placed a bid of over £7 million.

It would have been interesting to know about the contract that would have been on the table should the player have spoken to the club. Parker is on around £45,000 at Stamford Bridge, which would be over £20,000 more than the top earner at the JJB.

Jewell continued: "We have to be realistic about the type of player we can bring in. Established Premiership players are unlikely to join us at this stage, so the more realistic targets for ourselves are older stars who are coming to the end of their career or young hungry players who've made a name for themselves in the Championship.

"I'm confident in my ability to get the right people to do the job for us and I think my record in the transfer market proves that. I can assure supporters the team that starts this season will be better than the one that started last!"

If PJ brings no-one in all summer, that statement is already true as he acquired Kavanagh towards the end of last season.

Please Paul, Figo is unhappy at the Bernabeu, it's got to be worth a try.
