Latics linked with McCann and Melchiot

Mario Melchiot
McCann, 30, is being linked with a host of Premiership clubs as Villa boss Martin O'Neill restructures his side with owner Randy Lerner's support.

The former Sunderland player was born on the seaside in Blackpool and wouldn't be adverse to a move back to Lancashire. He signed for Villa in 2003 when David O'Leary paid a fee of £2.25m for his services, a similar fee could be expected at this time.

Meantime, Melchiot, also 30, is being linked with a move to the JJB. The former Chelsea and Birmnigham City defender is playing for Stade Rennes in France at the moment and would more than likely want another chance in the Premiership.

With 13 caps for the Dutch national team and a graduation for the same Ajax academy that produced our very own Denny Landzaat, Melchiot is certainly a player of pedigree.

He is available on a free transfer under the bosman ruling after his one year deal with Rennes expired this summer.
