The midfielder came over with Isidro Diaz and Jesus Seba from Spain and he went on to establish himself as one of the finest midfield players to play for the club.

Martinez made many friends in Wigan and his manner and personality were infectious. It also seems that the 33 year old has made the same impression with the Swans.

He is set to leave Chester City after a compensation package was agreed. The move now hinges on whether Bob - as he was know at the Latics - can agree personal terms with the Welsh club.

In a statement, Swansea City announced: "Provided that personal terms can be agreed in time, Roberto will be in attendance at Saturday's game at Yeovil Town.

"The club has received interest from over 50 parties for the post, and after carefully considering those applications, interviews took place this week with a number of candidates. Ever since Kenny Jackett's surprise departure last week, Roberto has been the Board's preferred candidate.

"After the interviews it was clear that Roberto was the best man for the job and the decision was made to offer him the position. Roberto comes highly recommended from many people in the game of football, none more so than Welsh boss John Toshack, who has offered Roberto any assistance that is required.

"Final details of the backroom coaching set-up will be announced next week."

I'm sure that everyone connected with Wigan Athletic wish Roberto all the best with his managerial career.

Good Luck Bob.
