Latics in for Jagielka

Jagielka is a key man in United's side and has attracted attention from a number of Premiership suitors. Although most have been put off by the silly asking price that the Blades' have put on his head.

The defender-cum-midfielder is 22 and has already skippered Neil Warnock's side. Given his exceptional stamina, work-rate and determination, he is a player that Jewell admires.

The Latics boss said: "We still need three or four more players to bolster the squad to give us more competition than there is now, and then when Nathan Ellington is fit, I think we will be OK then.

"We have made a bid for a player, it's a serious bid but I've not heard anything back from the club yet. I think it might have been turned down."

United vice-chairman Terry Robinson has since confirmed that the Latics have indeed made a move for the inspirational defender/midfielder.

He said: "I can tell you Wigan have made a sensible approach for one of our players and no agreement has been reached.

"We've been in negotiation with Wigan for Jagielka and the position is that Sheffield United are not really bothered about selling him.

"They have submitted a bid and we've turned it down. You'll have to ask them if they're going to come back with a bigger one."

He added that it would take silly money to tempt the Blades board to sell their star, "Unless someone comes in with a daft offer there is no reason to think he won't be at Sheffield United next season. From our point of view we want to keep Jagielka. It will take a massive bid for us to agree to sell him."

It is unclear whether Jagielka himself is seeking a move. Should he announce his desire to play in the top flight, it may force United to accept the offer, rather than have an unhappy player in their ranks.
