Chairman Dave Whelan paid out over £100,000 to bring in some of the leading experts in the sport, who have a proven track record with some of the biggest names in football, to relay the pitch in December, prior to the premiership clash with Charlton. The new pitch recieved high praise as Wigan went on to beat Charlton 3-0 in the first match played on it.

However, following a hectic period of matches and varied weather conditions, certain sections of the new surface experiences a loss of stability.

After a productive consultation, the decision has been made to repair the surface that has suffered the most instability, with the re-laying work to begin early in the morning on Saturday 25th February.

Wigan's Vice chairman Philip Williams said: "Our only concern is providing the very best surface possible for ourplayers to ply their trade and continue making Wigan Athletic a force in the Premiership"

He added: "I'd like to give a special word of thanks to our ground staff at the JJB Stadium who at all times have been working with the consultants. The reality is that they have done excellent work and we here at Wigan Athletic wish to acknowledge that fact"
