Bruce is looking to sure up his defence and Cahill, who spent a season on loan with Burnley, is said to be a player who interests him.

O'Neill said: "There has been a substantial amount of interest in him and I think Gary is aware of that because people have been speaking to his agent. I will sit down and speak to him to run through things with him."

Besides the Latics, the clubs said to be interested in the England under 21 international are Birmingham, Derby, and Sheffield United form where Cahill has just returned following a three month loan period.

Meantime former manager Chris Hutchings has not joined up with Paul Jewell at Derby County and is instead searching for employment as a number one himself.

Hutchings who was sacked by the Latics last month said: "I've taken a few weeks out but now I'm looking to get back into coaching or management as soon as possible.

"Everybody seems to think I'm at Derby. I've had so many people on the phone to congratulate me, saying: 'Well done on getting the job' but I'm not at Derby.

"I would love another chance to prove I can manage. My self belief is as strong as ever and I'm a bit wiser for the experience of the last six months. It certainly hasn't put me off.

"If that opportunity doesn't present itself, I'd be quite happy to go back to coaching. It will be a question of trying to stay patient and seeing what happens over Christmas and the New Year."

And in other news, it appears that Sunderland are likely to join Q.P.R. in the race to sign out of favour centre back Fitz Hall. A fee of £2 million is being touted for the former Oldham defender.
