The Daily Mail is today reporting that Paul Jewell is persevering to sign the 25 year old forward, despite Smith's desire to stay at Old Trafford and fight for his place.

After his bid for former Latic, Nathan Ellington was turned down by West Brom, the Latics boss has turned his attention's elsewhere.

Baggies chairman Jeremy Peace has been messing the Latics around with his valuation of the striker ever increaing and as a result, Jewell and Wigan have pulled out of negotiations.

England international Smith, nicknamed Smudge, is keen to stay on at Old Trafford and fight for his place after recovering from a bad leg and ankle break.

It is believed that boss Sir Alex Ferguson would be supportive of the six month loan move which would allow Smith to get some much needed football under his belt.

The Latics take on Portsmouth in the FA Cup today and have a shortage of forward players for the clash. It is expected that Paul Jewell will rest his key players, but new signings Andreas Granqvist and Kristofer Haestad could well make their debuts.

David Unsworth will not take part in the game after his signing from Sheffield United. Kick-off is at 15.00 and Wish FM will have full commentary of the game.
