The bid amount is said to be above £2 million. Birmingham City offered just £2 million for the player in October, this was turned down, and Bergen administrator Bjorn Dahl commented: "The offer Wigan have made is more than Birmingham's."

Brann director Per-Ove Ludvigsen to Nettavisen added: "We accepted an offer from Wigan last night. We have agreed about the transfer fee. He will be going to England immediately.

"Paul wanted to get this chance and we felt it was right to sell him now."

While the club's website, brann.no added: "The club have agreed a transfer fee with Premier League club Wigan and it is now down to the Austrian to discuss his personal terms.

The player himself is said to prefer a move to Wigan after the club's recent success in the Premiership and would opt for a move to the JJB ahead of St Andrews.

Scharner came very close to signing for Birmingham and has indeed been quoted by the Birmingham Evening Mail as saying: "Not everything is ready but we are very, very close to sorting things out."

He has played eleven times for Austria and operates mainly as a left back, but can play on the left side of midfield.

The 25 year old is seen by Paul Jewell as cover for England under 21 international Leighton Baines, who been an ever-present for the Latics league campaign this season.

Personal terms are yet to be agreed and Latics assitanct manager Chris Hutchings told wiganathletic.tv: "We've been talking to the lad, but time will tell, we will have to wait and see. We're looking for a defender first and foremost. Anything above that is a bonus for us, it's always nice if players can play in different positions.

"We are looking to strengthen the central defence and that's why we are interested in him."
