Welsh boss John Toshack jumped on his high horse when he heard the news that Koumas was to withdraw from the squad and demanded that Koumas was examined by the Welsh staff.

After an X-ray in Wales and confirmation of the injury, Koumas has retunred to Wigan to focus on regaining fitness in time for the game with Portsmouth on the 20th October at the JJB.

Koumas said: "There's no way I can play. I want to, but the hip injury is causing me too much pain. I had an X-ray in Wales this week. They found a problem with my hip which has caused pain in my groin and thigh. It's something I have had for a while."
