The riots started in the stands and the game was abandoned after 72 minutes with the Ivory Coast winning 2-0 (6-2 on aggregate).

It was the Senegalese fans who were causing issues by hurling rocks at the pitch and setting alight small fires in the stands.

Thankfully Latics striker Arouna Kone escaped unscathed. The former Sevialla striker was on the bench for Ivory Coast at the time.

“Unfortunately the match ended in very sombre circumstances,” read a statement from the Senegalese Football Federation. “The referee was forced to stop in the match in the 72nd minute with the score at 2-0 because of serious outbreaks in the stands by unhappy Senegalese supporters. The police took the public out after many confrontations.”

Former Latics midfielder Momo Diame was on the pitch for Senegal at the time and he also excaped un-injured.
