The former Liverpool and West Bromwich Albion goalkeeper has spent much of this season on the bench as Al-Habsi, on loan from Bolton, has impressed.
As the Oman international goalkeeper is on loan from Bolton, he was ineligible for the weekend's game against the Trotters and so Chris Kirkland came in for the Latics.
Following the match, Kirkland told the press that he will have to consider his future at the club should first team opportunities dry up.
He said: “If I am not playing too much between now and Christmas, I shall have to look at the situation. Now that I am fit, I want to play . It has been frustrating. We have another game on Tuesday and Ali Al-Habsi has done really well"
The England international also revealed that he is not presently thinking about the national squad after a number of recent snubs from current boss Fabio Capello.
“England is a different situation. I have been out of the picture for a long time and get bored hearing about it. I am just happy to be here," added Kirkland.
Tuesday night's visit of Swansea City could give an inclination as to the thoughts of boss Roberto Martinez regarding his number one choice. It was in the Carling Cup, against Hartlepool United, earlier this season when Al Habsi came in an made his mark ahead of the 1-0 away win over Tottenham Hotspurs.
