Kirkland: Arsenal won't like our pitch

The Arsenal players may look more like Sunderland supporters sliding down the Springfield Park grass bank on Sunday as they battle to contend with the poor state of pitch affairs at the JJB Stadium.

This doesn't concern goalkeeper Chris Kirkland who feels the pitch may be an advantage to the Latics. He told the Wigan Evening Post: "Arsenal pass the ball brilliantly so goodness knows how they will cope on our pitch.

"Hopefully it will play into our hands but Arsenal do have world-class players throughout who can probably play on any surface. It's going to be a very tough game and if we can take anything out of it, that would be a big bonus for us.

"We can take heart from the fact Birmingham drew 2-2 with them the other week and Aston Villa got a point off them on Saturday. We have got home advantage and we'll give it a right good go.

"The gaffer has always told us if we put the maximum effort in and end up getting beaten by good football, so be it. He just asks us to give everything we have got on the pitch, play your best, and see what happens.

"We are now playing the way the gaffer wants us to do. We're tuned into his ideas, and hopefully that will see us getting out of relegation trouble. Some people didn't expect us to get a point at Manchester City but we did, so why can't we get something off Arsenal?

"I thought we did well against City. Other results hadn't gone for us earlier in the day although we can't be worrying how the teams around us, it's about what we do."

Tickets are still available for Sunday's 4pm clash with Arsenal.
