Keane persistent in Baines chase

New Wigan boss Chris Hutchings has spent the summer fighting off interest from the North East club stating that he doesn't want to sell his best players.

With a strong progression in the transfer market this summer it was hoped that the clubs shining lights would remain with the club.

High Flyer: Leighton Baines
Paul Scharner and Emile Heskey have been persuaded to stay and aligned with the new signings, the Latics have the makings of a good Premiership side.

Baines has previously stated that he would only leave the club for one of the big four and surely a move to Sunderland is a sideways move at best.

However, Keane is quoted in hte Sunday papers as saying: "We're working hard to add maybe three players to the squad and we're hopeful things will happen in the next few days.

"We hope to have another few faces to add to the squad and challenge those players who are already here."

Latics fans will certainly hope that Leighton is not one of those three faces and perhaps Keane should go back to sucking Sir Alex Ferguson's teet in search of expensive cast offs.

Meanwhile, after missing out on Marlon Harewood to Aston Villa, it seems as though Hutchings will land Michael Brown early next week, despite late interest from Sheffield United, one of Brown's former clubs.

A fee of around £3 million is expected to be paid for the 30 year old combative midfielder.
