Jones hoping for more action

The former Wolves and Manchester United midfielder has found opportunities difficult to come by after suffering a spell of injuries toward the tail end of last season.

Now he is fully recovered and hoping to take his chance in the first team should the opportunity arise.

Speaking to the Wigan Evening Post, Jones said: “The manager is always highlighting the importance of competition for places and he stressed again before the game that we need to keep up the standards of the club – regardless of the competition we’re playing in.

“I thought the players who came in put on a really good performance and we’re hoping the manager was impressed with what he saw.

“If players are missing for the next game, as will be the case in at least one position, hopefully we’ve given him something to think about.

“Not just that, it was also a good work-out for a number of guys who haven’t played a lot of football so far this season.”

The Latics face Stoke City at home this weekend and have defender Antolin Alcaraz suspended following his red card in the game with Nottingham Forest.
